Should you quit your crappy job to start a business of your own? How can you know when it’s the right time?
When it comes to important, risky decisions, it is hard to know what to do. And often our own thoughts keep us from making any decision and all. And, as you know, making no decision is a decision itself.
I want you to be careful and deliberate about your decision to quit your job. Then I want to go ahead and do it. When you are ready, go ahead – quit.
Sometimes, what we rationalize as careful, deliberate research can, in truth, just be the delaying tactics of fear in disguise.
To tell the difference between careful consideration and fearful self-talk, consider these common limiting beliefs shared by consultant and coach, Ozlem Brooke Erol.
None of us think we are good enough. There will always be someone smarter, richer, stronger, better looking than you. So what? If you are ready, do it anyway.
We all want and need to fit into our group. You group may be your family, your friends from school, your church or your coworkers. Whether you are aware of it or not, you know the norms of behavior expected by your group and ancient survival skills keep you behaving in acceptable ways. Quitting your secure but crappy job is, generally, not acceptable behavior. Still, if you are ready, do it anyway. You will soon find yourself part of another, better group.
If you live in America, you live in a consumerist culture. Consumer spending is the bedrock of the economy. Success, as measured by possessions, is a logical extension of this idea. If you quit your crappy job you may have to make do with fewer things. So, what? If you are ready, do it anyway.
The economy, politics, the weather, the actions of other people: there is no limit to the circumstances that interfere with your ability to do what it is you want to do. You can choose to be a victim, or you can accept what you can’t change and get on with it. Building your own business is about overcoming challenges. Trust in your ability to carry on. If you are ready, do it anyway.
Of course, there is a voice in your head telling you to stay safe. You can choose to ignore this voice and take the risk or, you can do the research and planning you need to do to convince your safer self that quitting your job is the right thing to do. I show you how in my book. When you read the book and do the thinking you will be ready.
Of course! In the end our failure to act is always about fear. We humans are all afraid of the unknown, the uncertain, the future. Accept it. You will be afraid, but you can do it anyway. Get ready, get set and then go. Start your preparation with my book.
